AI Ads Act
A bill to amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to clarify that the prohibition under such Act against the fraudulent misrepresentation of campaign authority and the fraudulent solicitation of funds includes misrepresentation through the use of content generated in whole or in part with the use of artificial intelligence (generative AI), and for other purposes.
This bill aims to update the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 by specifically including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the prohibition against fraudulent misrepresentation of campaign authority and solicitation of funds. Essentially, it seeks to ensure that deceptive practices using AI-generated content are not allowed in election campaigns.
The bill would impact candidates, campaign teams, and anyone using AI to create campaign materials. It would require them to ensure that any content, even if AI-generated, is truthful and not misleading. This could affect how campaigns are run and how they are regulated, particularly in the use of new technologies.
SB5135 was introduced on July 27, 2026, and was immediately referred to the Committee on Rules and Administration. No further action has been taken yet. The bill is in its early stages, and it will need to go through committee review, possible amendments, and votes in both the Senate and the House before it could become law.
