SSI Savings and Efficiency Act of 2026
To amend title XVI of the Social Security Act to exclude in-kind support and maintenance from income for the purposes of the Supplemental Security Income program, and for other purposes.
This bill, HB8298, proposes changes to how income is calculated for the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. Currently, in-kind support and maintenance—such as food, shelter, or other non-cash assistance—are counted as income for SSI eligibility. The bill aims to exclude these types of support from the income calculation. This change could potentially make more low-income individuals eligible for SSI benefits.
This bill would affect low-income individuals who receive in-kind support and maintenance and are currently struggling to meet the income requirements for SSI. By not counting this support as income, it could help more people qualify for SSI and receive the assistance they need.
HB8298 was introduced on April 15, 2026, and has been referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means. This means it is now under review by the committee, which will determine its next steps in the legislative process.
